The Duruitoarea Gorge is a natural monument of national importance, located in the north-west of the Republic of Moldova, near the village of Duruitoarea Veche, Rîșcani District. The gorge was formed by the Duruitoarea stream, a tributary of the Ciuhur River, which over time carved a deep corridor into limestone rock. The area impresses with steep rocky walls, grottoes, caves, and well-defined karst relief, offering a wild and authentic landscape. It is also home to the Duruitoarea Veche Cave, an important archaeological site where evidence of prehistoric human habitation has been discovered. The gorge is appreciated by visitors for hiking, nature photography, and exploring Moldova’s natural heritage.
The gorge is crossed by natural paths, some sections being uneven, so proper hiking footwear is recommended. Access is best during the warm season, and visiting with a local guide can provide additional insight into the area’s geology and history.
