About

Hîrbovăț Monastery is one of the best-known Orthodox monasteries in central Moldova, set in a peaceful natural landscape along the Ichel River Valley, in Călărași District. It was founded in 1730 by the nobleman Constantin Carpuz and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. The monastic complex stands out through its simplicity and deeply spiritual atmosphere. Over the centuries, it has been an important pilgrimage site, especially known for the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God “Gârbovița”. A curious detail is that Hîrbovăț Monastery is depicted on the 50 Moldovan leu banknote, highlighting its cultural and spiritual significance. Today, it attracts both pilgrims and travelers seeking peace and reflection.
