About

The Monument to Stephen the Great and Holy in Chișinău is one of the most important historical and cultural symbols of the Republic of Moldova. Located at the main entrance of the public garden that bears his name, the monument depicts the great ruler of Moldavia in a solemn pose, holding a cross—a symbol of faith and the defense of the country. Unveiled in 1928, the monument was created by sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală and cast in bronze. Over time, it has become a central place for public events, ceremonies, and cultural gatherings. For visitors, the monument offers both a lesson in history and an iconic image of national identity. It is often the starting point for a walk through Chișinău’s historic center.

Good to know

The monument is located outdoors and can be visited free of charge year-round. It is a popular photo spot and an easily recognizable landmark in the city center.
