The Lower Prut Scientific Reserve is the most important protected wetland area in the Republic of Moldova, located in the lower floodplain of the Prut River along the border with Romania. At the heart of the reserve lies Lake Beleu, a highly valuable natural ecosystem included in the international Ramsar network of wetlands of global importance. The reserve is home to over 200 bird species, many of them rare, protected, or migratory, making it a key site for nesting and migration stopovers. The flora is dominated by reed beds, cattails, and aquatic vegetation typical of floodplain environments. The area plays a crucial role in water regulation and ecological balance.
