The “Dormition of the Mother of God” Church in Căușeni is one of the most valuable medieval art monuments in the Republic of Moldova, dating back to the late 17th–18th centuries. The church is remarkable for being partially built below ground level, a rare architectural solution linked to the Ottoman period. Its interior preserves original frescoes painted in 1763 by the painters Radu and Voicul, depicting biblical scenes, saints, and historical figures. The murals reflect late Byzantine and Balkan artistic influences and are considered unique in the region between the Prut and Dniester rivers. The subdued atmosphere and filtered light create a deeply spiritual and artistic experience. Today, the church is a key attraction for visitors interested in history, art, and cultural heritage.
The church functions as a museum-church and is usually visited with a guide to protect the frescoes. The interior remains cool year-round, and photography may be restricted in certain areas.
